Assistant Professor, MA in Foreign Language Teaching, Michigan State University
![]()
I am an Assistant Professor in the Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching program at Michigan State University. I received my Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences from Utah State University in 2020, and before that I earned a Master of Second Language Teaching, also at Utah State.
My research looks at how technology, and especially games and generative AI, can be used to improve and assess second language learning. Lately, I have been looking at how ChatGPT can be used to score L2 writing and to act as a conversation partner for learners of less commonly taught languages, and at how gameplay data can be used to assess young learners’ reading in Chinese. My work has been published in Foreign Language Annals, Language Learning & Technology, CALICO Journal, System, and Computer Science Education.
Before moving into academia I spent several years teaching English in China, Spain, and Chile. I have taught both English and Chinese as a foreign language, as well as graduate-level courses on second language teaching methods, assessment, educational technology, and using games for learning. You can find more about my work on the Research page.
